September Meeting Agenda
- Kevin Seals from Hanson Services will talk to ICON about rail relocation and the Springfield Rail Improvements Project. We hope to know whether federal funding for Ash and Laurel underpasses are approved by then.
From the July 27 SJ-R:
According to a Federal Railroad Administration analysis of 10th Street consolidation, nearly 120 homes and 53 businesses would have to relocate to make room for added tracks. Union Pacific freight trains and Amtrak passenger trains would move from Third to 10th Street. The entire project is expected to take years and to cost more than $300 million, according to state and federal figures.
The first big piece of consolidation, a $20.6 million underpass at Carpenter Street, is scheduled for completion early next year, said Jim Moll with the Springfield Rail Improvements Project, a local rail advisory group.
“The Carpenter Street underpass is moving along pretty much on schedule, though we have lost some time with all the rain this summer,” Moll wrote in an email.
Ash and Laurel streets are next in line for underpasses through rail consolidation, depending on funding. Moll said the city of Springfield should learn in September or October whether federal funding has been approved.
