ICON Update 7/22/11

To ICON Members and Participants

Just a reminder we will meet next Monday, July 25th, 7 p.m. at the First Church of the Brethren, Yale and Ash.

The aldermen who met with Mayor Houston a couple of weeks ago will bring us up to date on their discussion of the ICON proposals. I have also asked Kent Gray, an attorney for a number of the smaller municipalities in the area, to join us for that review.

Mark Cullen has been approved as new chief counsel for city legal. At last Tuesday’s Council meeting, Joe McMenamin asked him to explain his position on problem properties. He emphasized the need for stronger enforcement and developing strategies to get property owners to correct the problems. The ICON strategy of registration, time limits and increasing fines, and ultimately demolition and foreclosure, we hope will be seen as a positive step in the right direction.

We will also initiate discussion of the current garbage collection policy. Polly Poskin will review the position taken by a special committee appointed last year to see how the program was working. I have also asked Paula Zink, housing inspector, to attend and provide input as she did at our last meeting.
