Join the Citizen Club of Springfield Friday, September 27 at the Hoogland Center for an informative hour with Mark Mahoney, president of the Independent Coalition for our Neighborhoods (ICON). With a Mission to: “Improve the Quality of Life for Springfield Residents”, ICON advocates for better city policy and procedures to provide cleaner, safer and healthier neighborhoods throughout the city. Please join us from 8-9 a.m. as we learn how we can all work together for a better quality of life for everyone living in Springfield. Doors open at 7:30 a.m. Coffee will be provided. This program is free and open to the public.
Meet the Speakers
Mark Mahoney serves as the President of ICON, the Independent Coalitions for our Neighborhoods, a non-profit organization that advocates for city policies and use of resources that support clean, safe, and livable neighborhoods throughout Springfield. Mark has served two terms as the Ward 6 Alderman, nearly 8 years as the Director of the Springfield Public Works Department and is a former Clerk of the Illinois House of Representatives. He most recently served as the Chief Administrative Officer for the Illinois Department of Central Management Services and is currently the Chief of Staff at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. Mark graduated with a bachelor’s degree in History & Political Science from Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Illinois and completed studies toward a master’s degree in History from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He is a longtime resident of the Springfield area and is married with four children.

Jill Steiner is a 42 Years YMCA Career Professional with 38 of those years in Springfield. Along the way to her current position in HR she has served in leadership roles in aquatics, youth sports, family programming, senior services, custodial and property operations, school age, and camp. She has complimented her passion for the YMCA mission with leadership in the community at the board level with the Junior League of Springfield, ICON which supports healthy neighborhoods for all, and as a City Commissioner advocating for the rights of those with disabilities. She is VP of Programming for the local SHRM chapter. In May, the SHRM chapter awarded her a lifetime achievement award for service and leadership in HR. She is active in the YMCA on a broader scale with the IL Alliance of Y’s, a YUSA faculty & trainer, and the YUSA IL Peer Communities Leader for HR. She chairs the Citizens Club Membership Committee. She has lived in Ward 8 for over 20 years.
Polly Poskin has lived in Harvard Park for 31 years and is president of the neighborhood association. She serves on the steering committee for Independent Coalition for Our Neighborhoods (ICON). Polly is a board member of Moving Pillsbury Forward, a project created to abate and demolish the former Pillsbury Mills plant in order to foster economic development on Springfield’s northeast side. “You did not wake up to be mediocre” is her wish for Springfield.
